Attending University is a whole new world, with confusing lingo and acronyms. We’re here to help. Here is the rundown on some academic jargon and UW-Green Bay acronyms to help prepare you!
Arboretum: The Cofrin Memorial Arboretum is a natural boundary around campus. The natural space has more than six miles of trails and is used for recreational and research purposes. All are welcome to use this space for biking, running, bird-watching, cross-country skiing and simply walking among nature.
Bursar’s Office: This is the office responsible for billing and collecting tuition, fees, and housing or other University-related charges
Chancellor: A Chancellor is the top leaders at a University. UW-Green Bay’s Chancellor is Gary Miller!
The Cloud: The Leona Cloud Commons (often referred to as “The Cloud”) is the main dining location at UW-Green Bay. It is located in the University Union. It offers all-you-care-eat dining.
GAC: Located in IS (Sorry the buildings all are acronyms too! …Instructional Services), the GAC Lab (General Access Computer Lab) is home to Macintosh and Windows PCs for student and course use.
The Garden: The Garden is not what you picture. It is actually a dining location in the concourse-level (the floor with the tunnels) of the Cofrin Library. Currently, the Garden serves subs, sushi, soup and more!
GBOSS: The Green Bay One Stop Shop, located in Student Services, specialize in answering frequently asked questions on admissions, financial aid and registration. If you have a question about the University, this is a great place to start.
GTP: GTP stands for Good Times Programming, an activities programming board responsible for bring fun activities, events and performer to UW-Green Bay students on campus and off! Positions on the board are student employment positions.
MAC: Mary Ann Cofrin Hall (commonly known as MAC or MAC Hall) is the newest academic building on campus and is a building with classroom, meeting and office space.
MESA: Multi-Ethic Student Affairs (MESA) is an office on campus that provides advising, services and activities that promote the academic success, personal growth and development of multi-ethnic students. MESA also conducts educational programs that enhance learning through the promotion of respect and appreciation of racial and ethnic diversity.
Org Smorg: UW-Green Bay has more than 100 student organizations. Each semester the Orgs come together in the same place for Org Smorg in interact with new members. It is a great way to find new ways to get involved on campus.
Provost: At UW-Green Bay, the provost is the University’s second highest administrative officer and senior academic officer. The provost oversees programming and leadership of the four academic colleges; the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts, the Division of Continuing Education and Community Engagement, the Cofrin Library, the Office of Admissions, and leads the branch campuses in Marinette, Manitowoc and Sheboygan. UW-Green Bay’s provost is Michael Alexander, and he begins his new role July 1, 2019.
RHAA: The Residence Hall and Apartment Association (RHAA) is a student organization that deals with the opportunities and issues related to living on campus. RHAA plans programs for residents, and works to advise Residence Life administrators on policy changes and other topics of interest to the campus community.
SGA: SGA is UW-Green Bay’s Student Government Association, and it allows students to have an active role in University governance.
Shoe Tree: At UW-Green Bay, there is a unique tradition! Upon graduation, students to throw a pair of shoes into the Shoe Tree located on campus.
Tunnels: One the of the characteristics that makes UW-Green Bay Unique is how the academic buildings and the University Union are connected by a Concourse (a.k.a.) Tunnels. As a UW-Green Bay student, you have to venture outside in the rain and cold weather far less than students other Universities.
UTIC: The University Ticketing and Information Center, also known as the UTIC, is located in the University Union. At this desk, you can purchase tickets to events and performances on campus, receive information, check the University Union’s lost and found, request free locker space, register your bike, drop off mail and UPS packages and more!
