I work on campus as a student employee and I love it! Why? Here’s some reasons:
1) Earn money. As a college student, it’s nice to make some money. If you’re awarded Work Study money as part of your Financial Aid package, you need to get an eligible job to use that money. The Work Study program is where federal funds are used to pay 75% of your wages and the department you work for pays the remaining 25%. It’s a great program to use to your advantage. You don’t need Work Study to get a job on campus but certain positions/departments do require it.
2) Employers understand that you’re a student. On-campus employers know that you’re a student and your hours will be set around your class schedule. There’s also plenty of flexibility around your finals schedule.
3) Connect to campus. Working on campus helps you understand the resources available to students and gives you a behind the scenes view of parts of campus.
4) Network. Working on campus is a great way to get references for future jobs. Working while attending school shows employers that you are able to succeed outside the classroom as well as juggle classes and work.
5) Learn valuable skills. Applying and interviewing is great preparation for finding a job out in the real world. It helps develop skills that you wouldn’t learn in class.
6) Connect academics to a career. With so many departments on campus, there’s most likely a way to connect your on-campus job to your future career.
7. Convenience. You come to campus for class anyway, so why not stay to work? You can have time between work and class to do homework and grab a snack. With designated time for homework, watch your grades rise!
